Call for Nominations for a Canada 150 Research Chair in Biological Oceanography

The Université du Québec à Rimouski brings together more than 7,000 students, mainly at its Rimouski and Lévis campuses.

The Université du Québec à Rimouski’s Institut des Sciences de la mer de Rimouski (UQAR-ISMER) is seeking applications from outstanding researchers to develop a Canada 150 Research Chair in the fields of biological oceanography with a grant of CAN $ 2.45 million over 7 years. The candidate must have the ability to study the structure and dynamics of marine and estuarine biological systems in a context of global change. The research program of the Chair should be based on one or more of the targeted research topics : marine functional ecology, structure and functioning of marine ecosystems, interactions between physico-chemical and biological processes within marine communities and the use of theoretical and experimental tools to better understand marine biological systems.

UQAR-ISMER is actively contributing to the development and deployment of training and research activities around an axis of excellence on the theme of marine sciences. The successful candidate will have to contribute directly to this development by acquiring knowledge of the dynamics of marine organisms. The Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski has about twenty regular professors. The Chair will complement the strengths currently in place in ecology and ecophysiology of microbiological, planktonic, benthic and pelagic organisms in a context of global change and exploitation by fisheries and aquaculture. Master’s and PhD programs in oceanography have close to 110 graduate students. The candidate will be involved in teaching in graduate programs in oceanography.

At UQAR, Canada Research Chair holders are regular professors in tenure-track positions whose terms and conditions of employment are governed by the collective agreement. The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the application for the Canada Research Chairs Program 150 ; the position will be offered to him / her following a favorable opinion of the program. The candidate is eligible for the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) program and will be encouraged to participate.

The position is open only to researchers who are located abroad (including expatriate Canadians). UQAR fully endorses the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in access to employment for women, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal peoples and visible minorities, and in this regard encourages their application to this competition. UQAR also recognizes the impact that career interruptions may have on the record of research accomplishments. If so, the candidate is invited to explain, at the time of application, the impact a career break may have had on his/her achievement record.

• Graduation level : PhD in oceanography (biology) ;
• Field of graduation : Oceanography (biology) or equivalent ;
• Area of specialization : PhD in oceanography (biology), ecology or marine biology, ecology, zoology or biology in the marine sciences ;
• Skills : The candidate must have a large list of publications at the international level in the area relevant to the job description. He or she should be able to participate in master’s and doctoral programs in oceanography through supervision of students at higher levels.
• Privileged research sector : Dynamics of marine and estuarine biological systems.
