Today, certain planets such as Mars and the Moon are better mapped than the seafloor of our own planet Earth. Canada is boarded by three oceans whose seafloor needs to be studied as it holds precious information on natural hazards, climate changes and the geological evolution of Canada

In the framework of the Canada research Chair in Marine Geology, Prof. Guillaume St-Onge will examine the seafloor and its sediments using state-of-the-art techniques. The researcher will use these techniques either in the laboratory or during numerous oceanographic campaigns along the East coast of Canada and in the Canadian Arctic in order to map, analyse and understand the processes shaping the seafloor and its sediments. In order to achieve that goal, he notably studies long sediment cores in details.

By doing such a detailed analysis, Prof. St-Onge and his collaborators can go back in time several thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years into the past to learn about natural hazards, climate changes or the geological evolution of Canada, allowing a better understanding of ongoing changes. This knowledge is ultimately used to better adapt Canada’s infrastructures and policies to ongoing and upcoming climate and environmental changes, as well as natural hazards such as landslides and major floods.

The research conducted by Prof. St-Onge will also allow a better comprehension of the processes associated with the rapid melting of ice sheets and glaciers, processes that could be crucial in the forthcoming centuries in the Arctic and Antarctic. Finally, the work carried out by Prof. St-Onge and his team will shed light on climate dynamics and help improve numerical climate models.
