Project summary

This PhD is part a of bigger project about the two predominant Krill species in the estuary and Gulf of Saint-Lawrence : Meganyctiphanes norvegica and Thysanoessa raschii. Its aim is to estimate the quantity of Krill required to maintain the ecosystem integrity, particularly rorqual populations.
More specifically, it will focus on evaluating biomass and distribution of Krill stocks as well as their resilience to better understand their ecophysiology, behavior, production and predation pressures. Several species at different trophic levels depend on krill. My work will primarily focus on the needs of krill predators, specifically blue whale, fin whale, humpback whale and minke whale populations.

Research Objectives

1. Compare the diving behavior of rorquals feeding on Krill to rorqual feeding on fish using multidimensional data loggers which will be deployed on animals and will give an indication of every feeding event at the surface and down below
2. Through an energetics budget description, rorqual feeding patterns and biomass of prey field, we will try to estimate the consumption of both Krill species by rorquals in the estuary and the Gulf of Saint-Lawrence
3. Using bioenergetics models, we will estimate the optimal biomass of krill consumption needed by the different rorqual species for their energetic reserves and life cycle needs (i.e. migration and reproduction)
4. Define the optimal foraging efficiency conditions using diving tag data linked to prey field distribution
