About the project

Plastic debris has been identified as one of the most important emerging issues in the marine environment by United Nations Environment Programme. The plastic pollution in the marine environment has triggered an increasing concern on the ecological risks of plastic additives such as antioxidants, UV stabilizers, plasticizers and flame retardants. A thorough understanding of how these contaminants distribute, transport and transform in the environment is crucial for protecting the health of ecosystem and humans because these environmental processes are key factors affecting the mechanisms of exposure risks and toxicities of plastic additives. However, such knowledge is very limited. The objectives of this project are to develop advanced analytical method to measure plastic additives in complex environmental matrices at trace levels (e.g., parts-per-trillion to parts-per-billion) and investigate the occurrence and bioaccumulation of these contaminants in the St. Lawrence River, Estuary and Gulf.
